Phil Smidt Restaurant

was the destination for all of the very special occasions. If you wanted to impress your date, you couldn't do any better than to take them to Phil Smidt's.

Senior Prom's, wedding receptions, anniversary parties were memorable if they were held at this fine eating establishment on north Calumet Avenue regardless of who you were with or who you married.

The magic of this place was enhanced by the fact that you thought you could see Lake Michigan from here. And there was also the special treat of seeing the Rinso Soap box on top of Lever Brothers as you drove by.

Unfortunately, Phil Smidt's Restaurant was closed in October of 2007. Known for their Lake Perch, Frog Legs and other culinary items, they will be missed.  A gift that keeps on giving is a recipe and below is Phil Smidt's famous tartar sauce recipe. Enjoy.

  PHILIP POTEMPA
of The Times wrote...

"I called owners David and Barbara Welch and they are still confident the eatery will resurrect in a new location at some point in the future.

In addition to their famous frog legs, lake perch, gooseberry pie and side salads, their lightly tinted green homemade tartar sauce was another trademark favorite. During our chat, David was kind enough to give me the scoop on their tartar sauce recipe, or at least enough for me to share his close version."
