Aloha Hazel,

I am contacting you regarding my Mom, who went to Hammond High School and graduated in 1929. She is interested in knowing how many of her graduating class would be interested in communicating with each other. She does have access to a computer and is able to send and receive e-mails, but I wanted to do some of the "leg work" for her.

Her name was Ermyntrude Grobner, class of 1929. Can you put me in touch with someone that could help me get that information?

I found your name on the search I did for Hammond High School, and I thought you might be able to help me.
Thank you so much, if you can,

Warmest aloha,

Ilona Coffey

Dear Ilona,

I am sending you a picture of your mother, taken from my copy of the 1929 Dunes, the Hammond High School yearbook. The description reads:

Ermyntrude Grobner "Sweet, lady-like demeanor"
Hobby: Chewing gum in Advisory
Representative, Ace of Clubs, G.A.C., Girl Reserves Herald Reporter, Biology Club Herald Reporter.

Many of her classmates are the grandparents or parents of members of the HHS Class of 1959. I am sure that many of her friends and classmates have passed away but I will post your letter and her photo on our HHS'59 web site. Perhaps it will be visited by someone in her class and they can be in touch.

Growing up in Hammond was a very special experience. You may visit our digital tour of Hammond at: www.hhs59.com or www.geocities.com/hhs59/

I hope it brings back fond memories for her.

What a great website and a fantastic job of putting it together!

The pictures were great and brought back many memories. I used to swim and ice skate at Harrison Park. My dad was with Lever Brothers for over 30 years.

I went to the old Edison on Jackson Street and in '38 or '39 went to the new Edison which has since been torn down and replaced with a beautiful building. I lived in South Hammond on Van Buren.

I moved to Miami in 1947 and with the exception of five years on Long Island in New York, have been here ever since. I'm a transplanted Hoosier.

Went back to Hammond a few years ago and the downtown was a disaster! We had our 60th reunion in 2002 in Branson, Missouri and very few people showed up. We are getting up there in age and some of us are coming unglued.

PS: I saw Bernie Kruger's name mentioned. Bernie lockered next to me.

We had a wonderful class even if during WW2.  I look back at the pictures
and I am a  teenager again, going to Dietricks, Maid Rites and sock hops.  We just sent to Marshalltown, Iowa for a dozen Maid Rite Hamburgers.....still taste good to us.

I have lived in Southern California since 1953.

I am a 1958 graduate of HHS and am living in Munster. Taught a computer business education lab at the former Hammond Tech and the now Area Career Center from 1973 to 1999. Would enjoy news about former friends and classmates. Interesting how our paths have taken all of us.

Looking at the 1944 photo of HHS faculty, I was amazed at how many of the
teachers who not only taught me, but both my parents!

During the four years between 1956 and 1960, the teachers I loved and hated
were: King, Jacobson (math at Edison School), Bolt (good old A.T.and
journalism class), K. Williams, H. McCullough, E. McCullough, Dietrich,
Bollenbach, McGranahan, Thiel and my all time favorite who influenced my
career choice and whose wise words I remember to this day: Olga Schubkegel!

Many of the teachers I named taught my deceased parents, both of whom
attended HHS, class of 1940. My parents met at a favorite hang-out of their
day, Miner and Dunne, where they both worked after school.

My grandparents, Emma Eret and Darwin Eret were both teachers (Darwin taught
orchestra at Clark High School in Whiting, Indiana for 35 years), and were
friends with many of the teachers shown in the photo so I knew a lot about
the personal lives of many of our teachers with whom they socialized which
was sometimes a disadvantage.

Miss McGranahan's class was a turning point for me. It was my reaction to her
style that helped me become a "rebel". A friend and I wrote a "fictional"
story about a cruel teacher which detailed several incidents that were
identical to situations in our class that we felt were outrageous. We mailed
the story anonymously to her home.  I don't remember the details of the
story, but she read it aloud in class the day after she received it and
looked at each person as she read. The story did not call names but simply
detailed the incidents that we felt were wrong. At the end of the story, the
cruel teacher led the unhappy life that she deserved!

My heart pounded and I dared not glance at my partner in "crime" and when she
was finished reading, she called my friend and I to the front of the class to
identify who she "knew"' to be the authors. She promptly sent us to the
principal's office and that was followed by a visit to my counselor, Mr.
Brock, who told me I no choice but to apologize. He actually was sympathetic
but under the circumstances, couldn't suggest anything except that we
apologize. Of course life was never the same in her class after that (I can't
remember if I passed, but I think I did) and it is one of the bitter/sweet
memories of HHS.

Thanks for the website. It is fun to revisit those times, painful though some
of the memories are for me.

      Class of 1965
    Greetings, Hazel!

I just visited the website for Hammond High School and so your offer to send photographs of graduating seniors from the past. Recently, my son has been researching the life of my dad, his grandfather, who died before my son was born. If you have access to a picture, it would be such a blessing to have it!

Perry Pratt attended Hammond High School. He was born in 1917, so I'm guessing that he would have graduated in 1935, give or take a year. His older siblings would also have attended there: Cyrille and George, who were a few years older, and Dorothy, who was the youngest.

As a footnote, I am also a graduate of HHS, Class of 1965.

Thanks so much, Hazel, for checking on this for us!

Hi Leslie,

I am pleased to be able to send you Perry Pratt's senior picture taken from the 1936 issue of the Hammond High School Dunes, the annual yearbook. We looked for other pictures from groups with which he was involved such as Boys Chorus, but no other pictures appeared to be included. I hope you receive this and are able to print it out and save it.

I'm glad we were able to help in your search...

Hazel,

Thank you so much for the wonderful picture of my father. I will forward it to many family members. As a personal note, we just found out today that our thirteenth grandchild due in March is a boy. His middle name will be Perry in honor of the grandfather my children have come to know and honor through stories and letters from the war years. Once again, thank you for your fine service!

All the best,

Leslie

I am a 1979 HHS grad who now lives in Singapore. I've read your comments on classmates.com regarding Maid-Rites and checked out your class of '59 site. Very interesting stuff. I am absolutely starving now and craving a Maid-Rite hamburger!

You can order Maid-Rite burgers for delivery by FedEx packed in dry ice from a 70 year old Maid-Rite restaurant in Marshalltown, Iowa. They have a website at www.maidrite.com.  You can call them at 641 753-9684 to order. I shipped a dozen to my parents, both HHS grads and Maid-Rite fans, for a gift one time. They were great.

My question is, do you remember Kwiki Snack, another great Hammond hamburger joint? I'm not sure if  I'm spelling this right but it used to be on the west side of Hohman Avenue in Downtown Hammond where the new part of St. Margaret's is now. I'd love to have their recipe too!

Take care,

Hi,

I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you thanks for the Maid Rite
recipe. I didn't graduate from your school but did graduate from Grundy
Center, Iowa, high school and we also had a Maid Rite in our town.  It
was a gathering place for everyone in High School. My wife and I now
live in Hibbing Mn, but go back to Grundy Center about once a year to
see relatives and friends, and when we do we always go to have a
Maid Rite which we both love.
Tried your recipe and will have to say it is great!!!!! Closest
thing that I have tried to taste the real thing.. We graduated in "64
and wife in "66
I enjoyed looking over your whole website even though I know
nothing of your town.. Was interesting about the Maid Rites.  Thanks
again for posting that recipe.  Will be at the top of our list.. Already
sent your site to my sister in law in Toledo Ohio who also loved them
and also to some friends of mine that were familiar with them... We do
have a Maid Rite shop about 90 miles from here but don't get there often
and our home town is 400 miles away so you can see how I appreciate your
recipe...

Have a great day,
Mr, and Mrs Harley Getting
Hibbing, Mn.
