First Christian Church
Disciples of Christ
Calumet Avenue & Summer Street

Early 1913 photograph of The First Christian Church located on the corner of Calumet Avenue & Summer Street.

Postcard companies would take a standard
photograph, remove unsightly telephone poles,
often adding people, vehicles and color to
enhance the printed image.

The building on the far left is Lafayette School
which has since been torn down.

The congregation sold the building and moved to its new location in Griffith/Highland area.   My grandmother (Helen Morton) and grandfather (Charles Barnes) were the second couple to be married in this church. Helen was the daughter of Hammond's first Fire Department Chief, Frank Leslie Morton.
